GE2025 Nomination Day Surprises Unravel Last-Minute Tactical Moves by PAP and WP

GE2025 Sees Last-Minute Swaps and Strategic Maneuvers at Highly Contested Nomination Day

The race for the 2025 General Election in Singapore began in earnest on Nomination Day, revealing a series of unexpected twists that further intensified the already keenly contested electoral atmosphere. The ruling People’s Action Party (PAP) strategically reshuffled key candidates, keeping opposition parties on their toes until the last moment. Notably absent from the lineup were Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat and Senior Minister Teo Chee Hean, creating speculation and intrigue in the election landscape.

The Workers’ Party also made surprising moves by placing former Aljunied GRC Member of Parliament Faisal Manap at the helm of its Tampines GRC team and introducing a fresh face, Harpreet Singh, in the new Punggol GRC. Additionally, the party enlisted the experienced Yee Jenn Jong to lead its campaign in East Coast GRC, showcasing a strategic combination of seasoned and new talents.

One of the unexpected decisions was the Workers’ Party’s choice not to contest in the Marine Parade-Braddell Heights GRC, resulting in a walkover for the PAP. This move added an element of unpredictability to the election dynamics, setting the stage for a unique electoral landscape.

After a dynamic and rainy Nomination Day, key highlights emerged, including a total of 92 out of 97 seats being contested, with five multi-cornered fights, marking a significant increase since GE1991. Within these contested seats, Tampines GRC stood out with a four-way battle, reminiscent of the political contests of 1997. The presence of two independent candidates in Radin Mas Single Member Constituency (SMC) and Mountbatten SMC further diversified the electoral battlefield.

The sudden reassignment of Manpower Minister Tan See Leng, originally the anchor minister for Marine Parade-Braddell Heights GRC, to Chua Chu Kang GRC underscored the last-minute strategic adjustments made by both the PAP and opposition parties. This reshuffling highlighted the fluidity and complexity of electoral campaigns.

Amid the series of developments, Workers’ Party chief Pritam Singh explained the party’s decision not to contest in Marine Parade-Braddell Heights GRC, citing strategic considerations and the need to allocate resources effectively. Singh’s insights shed light on the meticulous planning and tough choices political parties face in maximising their electoral impact and campaigning strategy.

The multi-cornered contests in various constituencies added an extra layer of excitement to the electoral landscape, with Tampines GRC, Sembawang GRC, and Ang Mo Kio GRC featuring intense battles among multiple parties. The presence of independent candidates in wards like Potong Pasir and Radin Mas injected further diversity into the election landscape, promising a spirited electoral campaign ahead.

As all parties and candidates embark on the official campaign period, the GE2025 promises to be a challenging and dynamic electoral season filled with strategic manoeuvring, unexpected turns, and fierce political competition.
