The National Trades Union Congress (NTUC) announced that its membership has surpassed 1.4 million ahead of May Day, marking a significant increase from its previous count of over 900,000. Mr. Ng Chee Meng, the Secretary-General of NTUC, highlighted this achievement and the organization’s continuous efforts to support its members in navigating economic challenges. The membership growth reflects NTUC’s sustained commitment to enhancing the welfare and prospects of workers in Singapore.

“We have made a real impact on workers’ wages, welfare, and work prospects. But we cannot rest. We know the global situation is increasingly uncertain, with the tariff war between the US and other countries,” said Mr. Ng, emphasizing the need for continued efforts to address the evolving economic landscape.

NTUC has taken proactive steps to address the uncertainties stemming from the tariff war between the US and other nations. It is part of the national task force aimed at assisting affected businesses and workers in navigating the challenges posed by US tariffs on Singapore goods. Additionally, the organization is closely monitoring the situation and has pledged to intensify efforts and implement additional measures as necessary.

Mr. Ng acknowledged the concerns of union leaders, particularly their anxieties about the potential impact of US tariffs on Singapore’s electronics, chemicals, logistics, and transport sectors. The increasing production costs and the prospect of retrenchments have been significant concerns among union leaders.

Ahead of May Day, NTUC also highlighted its accomplishments in various areas, including youth, professionals, managers, and executives (PMEs), caregivers, older individuals, and vulnerable groups like platform workers and lower-income earners. The organization has been instrumental in supporting older workers in accessing employment opportunities, with initiatives such as the Company Training Committee (CTC) Grant, which encourages employer-led training and provides support for job redesign to create a more ergonomic work environment for older workers.

NTUC’s advocacy efforts have resulted in the establishment of the SkillsFuture Jobseeker Support scheme, aimed at providing short-term financial support for the involuntarily unemployed. The organization’s Job Security Council, created during the COVID-19 pandemic, has successfully placed over 110,000 workers, including PMEs, during the economic downturn.

“We will continue to journey alongside workers and provide the necessary resources to support them in navigating their careers and future,” affirmed Mr. Ng, highlighting NTUC’s commitment to empowering workers and addressing their evolving needs.

In light of the shifting economic landscapes and workforce demands, NTUC has emphasized the importance of encouraging workers to join and partner with the labor movement, unions, and associations. With 58 unions and 27 NTUC e2i career and job services in place, the organization remains dedicated to providing comprehensive support to workers.
