WP secretary-general Pritam Singh expressed delight in presenting the potential candidates, emphasizing their unique experiences and perspectives poised to contribute significantly to the party’s vision for Singapore.
The newly unveiled potential candidates include Mr. Abdul Muhaimin Abdul Malik, Mr. Kenneth Tiong, Ms. Eileen Chong Pei Shan, and Ms. Siti Alia Abdul Rahim Mattar. Each candidate’s background and aspirations were shared to provide insight into the diverse expertise and motivations within the party’s ranks.
For the Sengkang GRC, WP chair Sylvia Lim highlighted Mr. Abdul Muhaimin Abdul Malik for his extensive engagement with residents, showcasing his commitment to understanding the community’s concerns and aspirations. Mr. Abdul Muhaimin, a senior property manager at Aljunied-Hougang Town Council, emphasized his connection to the residents by sharing, “I am also a son, a husband, and a soon-to-be father. These are the real struggles that Sengkang residents have shared when I was on the ground.”
Another potential candidate, Mr. Kenneth Tiong, with a background in technology entrepreneurship, has been actively involved with the WP, contributing to policy development and community outreach. He emphasized fostering innovation within Singapore and the need to create a supportive environment for the workforce, stating, “I’m stepping up because I share the dream of making Singapore a place where we build that future through real homegrown innovation.”
The potential candidates also include Ms. Siti Alia Abdul Rahim Mattar, a lawyer with almost two decades of experience, and Ms. Eileen Chong Pei Shan, from a background in the social impact sector, both expressing a deep commitment to serving the people of Singapore and upholding the values and principles of the Workers’ Party.
Addressing inquiries about the candidate selection and the number of individuals it intends to field for the upcoming election, the party reiterated its focus on identifying individuals who demonstrate a strong commitment to public service and embody the party’s vision for Singapore’s future.
The unveiling of these potential candidates demonstrates the Workers’ Party’s early and strategic approach towards GE2025, committing to engaging the electorate and presenting a diverse and dynamic team to lead the party’s campaign. As the election season unfolds, the party’s vision and leadership will undoubtedly play a pivotal role in shaping the discourse and policies that will define Singapore’s future.
In addition to the first batch of potential candidates, the Workers’ Party recently introduced four more individuals—Dr. Ong Lue Ping, Mr. Jimmy Tan Khim Teck, Ms. Alexis Dang Pei Yuan, and Mr. Andre Low Wu Yang—unveiled at the WP headquarters by Secretary-General Pritam Singh and Chair Sylvia Lim. Dr. Ong Lue Ping, a senior principal clinical psychologist at the Institute of Mental Health, expressed his motivation for joining opposition politics, stating, “My response to that is actually quite simple, it basically is really just another way for me to serve the country I love, and the Singapore I am grateful for.”
Mr. Jimmy Tan Khim Teck, co-founder of Immanuel Engineering, expressed his commitment to democracy and a more balanced political system with opposition representation, citing his “political awakening” as the reason for joining the Workers’ Party in 2017.
Ms. Alexis Dang Pei Yuan, a senior director at Teads, highlighted her belief in the need for diverse and ground-up voices in parliament, emphasizing that it’s time for more diverse, more ground-up voices to be heard in parliament.
Mr. Andre Low Wu Yang stressed the importance of diversity and different perspectives in the current political landscape, asserting, “We grow stronger when different perspectives are brought to the fore, especially by a loyal opposition.”
Including these new candidates, the WP has assembled a diverse team for the upcoming election, featuring tech entrepreneur Kenneth Tiong, senior property manager Abdul Muhaimin Abdul Malik, lawyer Siti Alia Abdul Rahim Mattar, and former diplomat Eileen Chong Pei Shan. Party chief Pritam Singh confirmed the party’s plan to contest in fewer than one-third of the 97 parliamentary seats available.
As the election approaches, the focus is on the WP’s party renewal and the potential formation of a “shadow cabinet.”
