The People’s Action Party (PAP) has announced lawyer Alex Yeo as its candidate for Potong Pasir Single Member Constituency (SMC) in the upcoming General Election 2025 (GE2025).
This comes as current MP Sitoh Yih Pin steps down after holding the seat for 13 years.
Sitoh stepping down after 3 terms
Sitoh first won Potong Pasir back in 2011, ending the opposition’s 27-year hold over the ward. He was re-elected in 2015 and 2020 and has now served the area for three full terms.
In a press statement, PAP said Sitoh will not be contesting in the next GE, and they thanked him for his years of service.
Who is Alex Yeo?
If Alex Yeo’s name sounds familiar, that’s because he contested in Aljunied GRC during GE2020. Back then, the PAP lost with 40.05 per cent of the vote against the Workers’ Party, which won with 59.95 per cent. While his team didn’t win that time, he’s no stranger to the PAP or community work.
In fact, Alex has been active in Potong Pasir for many years already. Back in 2016, he started a Community Legal Clinic in the area to give free legal help to residents.
At the announcement, Alex said Potong Pasir holds a special place in his heart, and returning to serve the residents feels like “coming home”.
He also said he’s committed to walking the ground and understanding the needs of the residents.
Multi-cornered fight expected in Potong Pasir SMC
Potong Pasir SMC might see a multi-cornered fight in GE2025.
The SPP and the People’s Alliance for Reform (PAR) have indicated their intention to contest Potong Pasir SMC this year.
Voter numbers went up
Two precincts from Potong Pasir SMC were moved to Marine Parade GRC in the latest Electoral Boundaries Review Committee report. This adjustment came in response to rapid population growth from new developments in Bidadari.
As of Feb 1, the constituency has 30,897 registered voters, up from 19,731 in 2020.
When asked about this increase in the constituency, Mr Yeo said he and his team must work even harder to serve them. He also noted that the residents here are a very diverse group. “We must be very observant and be able to understand what these different needs are,” he said.
