Mr Patrick Tay, the current Member of Parliament (MP) for Pioneer and Assistant Secretary-General of the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC), will be contesting Pioneer Single Member Constituency (SMC) again under the People’s Action Party (PAP) in the upcoming General Election 2025.
Pioneer SMC, which has 25,166 registered voters, remains unchanged in the latest electoral boundary review. However, it is now surrounded by the newly formed West Coast–Jurong West GRC.
Mr Tay is not just an MP – he’s also a labour MP who has spent years championing the rights of workers, especially Professionals, Managers and Executives (PMEs). In Parliament, he has spoken up regularly on issues such as:
-
Stronger workplace fairness laws to protect workers from discrimination
-
More help for those who are retrenched or involuntarily unemployed
-
Fair hiring practices to ensure locals are treated fairly
-
Better support for PMEs to reskill and stay competitive
One of his biggest pushes was for the Workplace Fairness Legislation, which will soon become law. This is a big step forward in giving Singaporean workers more protection at the workplace – and Mr Tay played a key role in getting it done.
In the 2020 General Election, Mr Tay won 62% of the vote in a three-cornered fight.
Meanwhile, in the newly formed West Coast–Jurong West GRC, the PAP has announced its team for GE2025.
The five-member slate will be led by Minister for National Development Desmond Lee and includes incumbent MPs Ang Wei Neng and Shawn Huang. Joining them are two new faces: Dr Hamid Razak, an orthopaedic surgeon who has volunteered in Taman Jurong for 17 years, and Cassandra Lee, a lawyer focused on supporting young families and youth development.
The Progress Singapore Party (PSP) has also announced that it will contest in Pioneer SMC again, although they have not revealed their candidate yet. This could set the stage for another competitive fight in GE2025.
