Very heavy traffic expected at Singapore-Johor checkpoints over Good Friday long weekend, ICA advises to avoid peak hours

If you’re planning to head into Malaysia over the Good Friday long weekend (April 17–21), be prepared for jam-packed land checkpoints.

Singapore’s Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) says this weekend is usually one of the busiest times of the year at both the Woodlands and Tuas land checkpoints.

According to Zaobao, just last month, during the Hari Raya long weekend (March 28–31), more than 1.8 million people crossed the borders. On March 28 alone, a whopping 538,000 people made the trip.

With a similar crowd expected this weekend, ICA warns that those driving across the border could face waiting times of up to three hours.

What You Can Do to Avoid the Jam

ICA recommends travellers try to avoid peak hours and take cross-border buses instead of driving.

They also urge everyone to follow officers’ instructions patiently. Strict action will be taken against those who break the rules.

QR Code = Faster Clearance

To speed things up, ICA encourages bus passengers to use QR codes instead of passports to clear immigration.

Wheelchair users and families with up to four members can proceed to the special assistance lanes at the bus hall to use the QR code clearance.

For Those Driving Foreign-Registered Vehicles into Singapore

Make sure you have:

  • Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP)

  • Approval email from LTA

  • Autopass card

Also, clear any outstanding fines – if not, you may be denied entry.

Important Reminders for All Travellers

  • Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months

  • PRs who changed passports must transfer their Re-Entry Permit to the new one

  • Long-Term Visit Pass holders must update ICA or MOM if their personal details have changed

  • All short-term visitors must submit the SG Arrival Card (SGAC) online within 3 days before arriving in Singapore

  • Don’t bring in any prohibited or controlled items without declaring them

Last year, during the Good Friday long weekend, nearly 2.3 million people passed through the land checkpoints. March 28, 2024, even saw a record high of 510,000 travellers in one day.
