Singaporean Man Drowns Near Island in Johor

Singaporean Drowns, Malaysian Survivor, Indian National Missing

A Singaporean man has drowned while swimming near an island in Johor. He was believed to have been swept away by the currents, reported Johor’s Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) to The Star.

The tragic incident unfolded when three men went swimming off Pulau Mawar, prompting a call for assistance at about 2.37 pm on Monday (7 April).

Upon receiving the distress call, the Endau fire station dispatched seven personnel to the scene on Pulau Mawar, a picturesque island approximately three hours’ drive from Singapore.

Upon arrival at 2.56 pm, rescuers discovered that three men had gone swimming in the waters off the island. One of them, a Singaporean, was found floating in the water and brought to shore by members of the public, said Assistant Superintendent Mohd Alias.

Tragically, he was pronounced dead at the scene. Another man, a Malaysian, managed to save himself, while rescuers continued their search for the third man, an Indian national, in an operation led by the Endau fire station, involving a total of seven personnel, a Light Fire Rescue Tender (LFRT) vehicle, and a Hilux unit.

Regrettably, the events took an even more sombre turn when Malaysia’s Berita Harian reported that the body of the Indian national was also found later in the evening.

Assistant Superintendent Mohd Alias confirmed the tragic discovery, stating that 45-year-old Narayanan Ravi was found about 300m from where he was reported missing. The operation concluded at 6.21 pm, as the rescuers handed the body over to the police for further action.

The deceased Singaporean was identified as 37-year-old V. Yogaraj, while the surviving man was 39-year-old K. Anpananthan.
