The Singapore United Party (SUP) has announced that it will contest Ang Mo Kio Group Representation Constituency (GRC) in the upcoming General Election 2025 (GE2025), marking its first-ever participation in a general election.
Ang Mo Kio GRC is currently held by the People’s Action Party (PAP) and led by Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong, who has been representing the area since 1991 when the GRC was first formed. SM Lee initially entered politics in 1984 as the MP for Teck Ghee SMC, which was absorbed into Ang Mo Kio GRC in the 1991 electoral boundary changes.
SUP is a relatively new political party, formed shortly after GE2020. While this will be its first time contesting an election, one of its members, Andy Zhu, has previous experience in Ang Mo Kio. The 42-year-old property agent contested the GRC under the Reform Party banner in the 2020 General Election, where the team garnered 28.09% of the vote — a significant margin, though still far behind the PAP team led by then-Prime Minister Lee.
It remains unclear whether Andy Zhu will be leading the SUP team in this election or if new faces will be fielded. SUP has yet to announce its full slate of candidates.
The party’s decision to contest Ang Mo Kio GRC — one of Singapore’s most high-profile constituencies — suggests an ambitious effort to establish its political presence and offer voters an alternative voice.
Notably, the People’s Power Party (PPP), led by Goh Meng Seng, has also declared its intention to contest Ang Mo Kio GRC. Goh made this announcement during a recent walkabout in the ward, where he unveiled PPP’s campaign manifesto and introduced several new faces, including candidates with backgrounds in IT, horticulture, and public policy. PPP previously contested Tampines GRC in GE2020 but has now shifted its focus to Ang Mo Kio, even though the constituency is traditionally considered a PAP stronghold.
With both SUP and PPP expressing intent to run, Ang Mo Kio GRC is likely to see a multi-cornered fight at GE2025 — a rare scenario for a constituency of its profile.
In GE2020, Ang Mo Kio GRC was contested by the Reform Party and the PAP. The PAP team won with 71.91% of the valid vote, while the Reform Party took 28.09%. As more parties enter the race this time, the political dynamics could shift, especially with changes in leadership and broader national concerns shaping voter sentiment.
