Survey Reveals 96% of Singaporeans Prefer Staying with Parents

Young Singaporeans Prioritize Financial Stability Over Moving Out

According to a recent survey conducted by Answers.sg, a striking 96% of respondents expressed a preference to continue living with their parents.

This overwhelming response can be attributed to the rising housing prices in Singapore, making it a challenge for young individuals to move out and live independently. Pat, a student awaiting university admission, highlighted the financial aspect of this decision, stating, “Rent these days is crazy expensive.” For many like her, the financial burden of renting a place of their own is a major concern.

Pat emphasized the security that living with her parents provides her, both physically and financially. She mentioned that she would only consider moving out when she is much older and able to support herself financially. This sentiment is shared by many young Singaporeans who view staying with their parents as a form of financial stability in the face of the high cost of living in the country.

Another individual, 23-year-old Zoey Ng, shared her experience of juggling a full-time job and part-time work to afford rent and utility bills. Despite the challenges, she found it necessary to move out and live independently. For her, managing finances and making thoughtful spending decisions became crucial lessons she learned through this experience.

The cultural value of filial piety also plays a significant role in the decision of young Singaporeans to stay with their parents. Traditionally, Asian cultures prioritize the care and support of parents in old age. This expectation often leads youths to continue living with their parents until they get married. However, there is a growing trend where parents are supportive of their children’s desire to move out and gain independence before marriage.

While some young individuals like Jasmine Tan opt to stay with their parents due to financial concerns and the convenience of familial support, others, like Pat and Ms. Tan, see moving out as a step towards adulthood and independence.

Ms. Tan, currently residing in her university dormitory, views this experience as a small step towards adulthood, enjoying the freedom it offers while also cherishing the comforts of her parents’ home-cooked meals.
