In response to the recent changes in Singapore’s electoral boundaries, Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) secretary-general Chee Soon Juan shared his thoughts and announced that he will be rethinking his strategy following the removal of Bukit Batok Single Member Constituency (SMC).
Chee, who contested in Bukit Batok SMC during the 2020 general election, expressed his concerns about the redrawing of electoral boundaries that included Bukit Batok in the larger Bukit Timah GRC.
Reflecting on the electoral history of SDP’s participation, Chee highlighted the reshuffling of boundaries following the party’s narrow defeat in the 1991 elections and the progress made in 2020 when he garnered 45% of the votes. Chee raised allegations of gerrymandering by the ruling People’s Action Party (PAP) to maintain power, contrasting this with Minister-in-charge of the Public Service Chan Chun Sing’s assertion that the boundary delineation process is fair and transparent, serving the interests of Singaporeans.
Expressing his disappointment with the changes that have diluted years of work in Bukit Batok, Chee emphasized his determination to continue serving the residents, despite the constituency’s absorption into Jurong GRC. He called for support from Singaporeans, encouraging volunteering with the SDP and participation in a fundraising dinner at his restaurant Orange & Teal, exclusively for Singapore citizens.
Chee assured the public of his unwavering commitment and announced plans to update them in the coming days as he reevaluates his strategy in light of the altered electoral landscape. The article highlights Chee’s resilience in the face of challenges and his dedication to serving the community even amidst political changes, underscoring his continued pursuit of advancing his party’s agenda.
The SDP leader’s response to the electoral boundary changes underscores the significance of adapting political strategies in dynamic environments while staying true to the core principles of public service and community engagement.
“Every time I did not succeed, I took defeat on the chin, picked up the pieces and looked to see how I could do better,” Chee stated, encapsulating his unwavering commitment to his political endeavors and advocacy for the residents of Bukit Batok.
