In a recent discussion in Singapore’s Parliament, Minister for Culture, Community, and Youth Edwin Tong shared insights about the upcoming Lady Gaga concerts in the city-state.
Addressing concerns about government subsidies in securing the concerts, Minister Tong clarified that no government grants were provided for the event. He confirmed that the arrangements were handled directly by Kallang Alive Sport Management (KASM) in a commercial arrangement with the artist and venue.
Minister Tong emphasized the commercial nature of the agreement, stating, “No government grants were given to secure this event. This was a purely commercial arrangement between the artist and the venue.” The announcement comes ahead of Lady Gaga’s highly anticipated performance at the Singapore National Stadium in May, her only stop in Asia during the current tour.
When approached for comments, Guo Teyi, the director of leisure events at the Singapore Tourism Board (STB), expressed enthusiasm for Lady Gaga’s concerts, highlighting Singapore’s appeal as a leading lifestyle destination. She attributed Singapore’s success in hosting major international events to the collaborative efforts of industry partners and the strength of the city’s entertainment ecosystem.
Minister Tong also acknowledged the role of KASM in diversifying Singapore’s event landscape by bringing a mix of local and international events to the Sports Hub. He stated, “KASM pushes for events like this to take place at the Sports Hub to bring a diversity and a range of different events to Singapore including top-class marquee events.”
Lady Gaga, known for her electrifying performances, last performed in Singapore in 2012 as part of her Born This Way Ball Tour. Her return to the city for four shows in May coincides with the release of her seventh studio album, “Mayhem,” which has been praised for its dark-pop sensibilities and intriguing singles.
The announcement of Lady Gaga’s concerts in Singapore follows a trend of international artists gracing the National Stadium, with Taylor Swift also having performed there previously. While government support for Taylor Swift’s concert was confirmed through a grant by the Singapore Tourism Board, Lady Gaga’s concerts stand out as a purely commercial venture, highlighting Singapore’s vibrant and dynamic entertainment scene.
As Singapore continues to attract world-class artists and entertainers, the government remains committed to fostering a conducive environment for cultural exchange and artistic expression, exemplified by the upcoming Lady Gaga concerts and other high-profile events on the city-state’s entertainment calendar.
