In a surprising turn of events, the Lion City Sailors Football Club (Lion City Sailors) have clinched a major win in the AFC Champions League 2 quarter-finals after a ruling invalidated their 6-1 loss to Sanfrecce Hiroshima. The Singapore Premier League team now holds a commanding 3-0 lead in the first leg following the Japanese team’s decision to field an ineligible player.
The AFC’s investigation revealed that Sanfrecce Hiroshima’s French forward, Valere Germain, had played despite being under a three-match suspension. Germain’s appearance as a substitute resulted in a goal for Sanfrecce Hiroshima on March 5, ultimately leading to the favourable ruling for the Lion City Sailors.
As a consequence of this ruling, the Lion City Sailors will enter the second leg of the quarter-finals on March 12 at Jalan Besar Stadium with a comfortable lead. Sanfrecce Hiroshima has been penalized with a US$1,000 fine and will only receive half of its US$160,000 participation fee.
The AFC decision acknowledged that Germain served one match of his suspension with this incident and additionally cautioned Sanfrecce Hiroshima about the potential repercussions of any future violations.
In the initial leg at the Edion Peace Wing Hiroshima stadium, Sanfrecce Hiroshima, the J1 League’s previous season runners-up, dominated the game. Their victory was sealed with goals from Satoshi Tanaka, Hayao Kawabe, Valere Germain, Sota Nakamura, and a double by Ryo Germain. However, the Lion City Sailors managed to make their mark with a lone goal courtesy of Shawal Anuar, setting the stage for an intense second-leg clash.
The Lion City Sailors’ unexpected advancement in the AFC Champions League has undoubtedly stirred excitement and anticipation among fans, as they look ahead to the upcoming decisive match at Jalan Besar Stadium.
This evolving narrative showcases the unpredictable nature of football and underscores the importance of fair play and adherence to regulations in competitive sports.
Congratulations to the Lion City Sailors!
