In a letter to the president-elect, PM Wong expressed confidence in Mr. Trump’s leadership, acknowledging the significant trust placed in him by the American people to lead the nation once again.
Reflecting on the strong ties between Singapore and the United States, PM Wong emphasized Singapore’s readiness to collaborate with the new administration. According to CNA, he talked about how the partnership has prospered over the years, and how the US-Singapore Free Trade Agreement has been a cornerstone of the economic and trading ties that have blossomed between the two countries.
PM Wong also noted the upcoming 20th anniversary of the US-Singapore Free Trade Agreement, celebrating the substantial growth in bilateral trade and investments that have benefitted both countries. Not only has the trade agreement promoted economic growth, but it has also led to the development of many good jobs for Americans, which demonstrates that the relationship is indeed a two-way street.
Additionally, PM Wong invited Mr. Trump to return to Singapore, recalling his previous visit in 2018 when Singapore hosted a historic summit between the US President and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. He expressed eagerness to continue building on the progress made during Mr. Trump’s first term, particularly in strengthening defense cooperation, the economy, and trade relations.
During his visit to Indonesia, PM Wong highlighted the strategic defense pact that allows American forces access to Singapore’s air and naval bases, emphasizing the positive advancements in trade and investment flows under the previous administration. He restated Singapore’s pledge to continue improving relations with the new US administration and making America’s alliances in the Asia Pacific stronger.
