Mr. Wong Wei Loong had a seemingly innocent habit which resulted in a frightening incident when six teenagers reportedly took his unlocked car for a joyride in Sengkang. Because of a defective car key fob, Mr. Wong and his wife had been inadvertently leaving their car doors unlocked and the key inside the vehicle for almost two years, resulting in them experiencing the repercussions of this dangerous habit.
According to the Straits Times, Mr. Wong discovered that his car was not in its usual parking space at Block 457, Sengkang West Road’s multi-story carpark at 11:20 pm on October 29. Following a 40-minute unsuccessful search, he informed the police about the theft. Mr. Wong took a while to fully grasp the shocking truth that his car had been stolen, showing disbelief at the boldness of the theft.
During an unexpected moment, while speaking to police officers at the location, Mr. Wong and his wife observed their car engine starting and saw the vehicle driving into the carpark. Law enforcement promptly stopped the car and apprehended the group of six teenagers, made up of five boys aged 14 to 16 and a 13-year-old girl, for stealing the vehicle.
There are also things that were forgotten by the teens at the back of Mr. Wong’s car, like brass knuckles, an e-cigarette, a power bank, a sandal, a dime, and a gas station receipt showing a $59.52 refill at 2:12 am during the incident. The car experienced multiple damages, such as a bumper that is not securely attached, scratches on the outside, a glove box latch that is broken, and a dashcam that is not connected.
Luckily, Mr. Wong did not misplace any important belongings like his CashCard, camera, and lenses. However, he had conflicting feelings about the situation and promised to never abandon his post.
