Mr. Koh Wen Xiang, a 100-year-old Singaporean man, meticulously orchestrated his funeral arrangements before his peaceful passing in a nursing home on October 12.

His funeral procession was held with respect on October 18, which is a tribute to his enduring legacy and loving nature.

According to MS News, Mr. Koh, who was a devoted husband and father of 10 children, started planning his funeral after his wife’s passing to release the financial and emotional burden on his children. His belief that one should not leave this world with nothing resonated deeply as he meticulously incorporated Taoist and Teochew traditions into his ceremony, ensuring a dignified and memorable farewell.

The elaborate funeral procession, which cost approximately S$55,000, was a visual spectacle spanning over 100 meters. Four funeral floats, stilt workers portraying characters from ‘Journey to the West,’ and flag bearers waving towering 3.3-meter-high flags added a majestic touch to the proceedings. Accompanied by a singer, the procession lasted a reverent 45 minutes, with Mr. Koh’s children pushing the hearse for two kilometers, epitomizing their respect and love for their father.

Before his passing, Mr. Koh led a life of dedication and sacrifice for his family. Working tirelessly in diverse roles such as a chauffeur, dock worker, janitor, and karang guni, he selflessly supported his wife and children, especially his youngest son who suffered from a mental disorder. Even after being diagnosed with dementia, Mr. Koh chose to reside in a nursing home to avoid burdening his children.

The poignant revelation of his youngest son’s passing brought forth Mr. Koh’s serene acceptance, a testament to his profound strength and character. In a final gesture of familial unity, Mr. Koh’s ashes now rest beside his wife and youngest son’s ancestral tablets, symbolizing an eternal embrace of his loved ones’ spirits.
