Gem, a 38-year-old pioneer who completed her studies at the Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS), has triumphed over significant obstacles in her journey to achievement. Her path to obtaining a Master of Digital Marketing degree was defined by a serious injury at work, undergoing 14 surgeries, and struggles with depression.
As stated by MS News, Gem, who is now a Senior Manager for Group PR and Corporate Communications at Eurokars Group, used to be a determined cabin crew member until a workplace injury in 2013 altered her life’s path. The injury happened while she was on a plane and was originally overlooked by an orthopedic physician, resulting in a misdiagnosis that lasted for 6 years.
Despite enduring ongoing pain, Gem persisted with her studies and earned a sommelier certification while holding down a full-time job. In 2019, she only found out about the full severity of her injury – torn shoulder muscles – and needed 14 surgeries in a year to fix it.
Gem had a difficult journey to recovery, facing struggles like insomnia, mental health issues, and financial pressure. Due to increasing medical bills amounting to more than $300,000, Gem and her husband had to liquidate their home to pay for the expenses.
Despite facing challenges, Gem utilized her determination and resilience to continue her education at SUSS. Even with persistent shoulder pain, she managed to finish a postgraduate diploma in digital marketing and then signed up for the Master of Digital Marketing course. The classes not only gave her important skills in data visualization, coding, and social media analytics but also brought a new feeling of purpose and guidance.
While focusing on a promising career ahead, Gem deals with her shoulder pain and remains open to the opportunities coming her way. Her experience showcases the strength and bravery required to face challenges and come out more resilient.
