IRAS warns of emails from scammers claiming to offer Singaporeans tax refunds

In a recent alert, the Inland Revenue Authority of Singapore (IRAS) has warned the public of a new scam in which scammers are impersonating the tax authorities and sending phishing emails that promise a tax refund.

IRAS have urged members of the public to ignore the email and not to click on any suspicious links.

According to the IRAS, scammers have been sending out emails claiming to be from the taxman. In the email, they claim that individuals or companies have outstanding fines under the classification of underpayment of estimated corporation tax.

The email then either requests full payment of the fine or offers options to appeal or reduce it. However, the IRAS has emphasized that they do not send any notifications regarding tax matters through unencrypted emails.

To avoid falling victim to conmen, IRAS reminds members of the public to click only the links with iras.gov.sg or go.gov.sg. For tax transactions including filing and payments, taxpayers should always use relevant forms and digital services in myTax Portal secured by Singpass login.

IRAS added that it will not ask for taxpayer details or any confidential information via e-mail or unsecured web links.

The authorities have strongly urged the public to ignore such phishing emails and refrain from clicking on any suspicious links. Individuals should not provide any personal, credit card or bank account details.
