After spending $116 on raw marinated seafood, a female engineer and her friends suffered from food poisoning which resulted in her being hospitalised for two days and incurring medical expenses of $8,000.

Miss Wu, a 29-year-old engineer told Zaobao that she spent $172 on 23 December 23 to purchase some raw marinated seafood which include crab, shrimp, scallops and salmon sashimi from an online store.

“I saw an advertisement on social media selling raw marinated seafood. Since it looked very attractive and I love eating raw marinated seafood, I placed an order, and the order was delivered to me at about 7pm that evening,” she said.

She recalled that the seller offered to cancel the salmon sashimi order and refunded her $56 claiming that the refrigerator in which the salmon sashimi was kept was malfunctioning.

“The five of us ate the seafood together that night. After I had breakfast the next day, I suddenly started vomiting and having diarrhoea. It didn’t stop until the evening. In the end, I had no choice but to go to the hospital for treatment. Later I learned from a female friend that she also suffered from diarrhea, but the other three friends were fine.”

She was hospitalised for two days, during which the doctor detected Vibrio in her faeces. Fortunately, she was fine after observation, but the medical expenses were as high as $8,000.

She was discharged from the hospital after two days of stay, but she still feels bloated in her stomach, which makes her feel uncomfortable and she has to be careful of what she is eating.

She was afraid that other people would suffer the same fate as her, so she immediately contacted the seller asking them to suspend sales or at least inform customers in advance to be careful. However, the seller did not do so and only responded four days later saying that they did not see her message and refunded the full amount of $116 to her.
