You might have come across the piece of news about an uncle whose car was smeared with shit at Blk 49 Sims Place in Aljunied.

A 52-year-old man was arrested subsequently for causing public nuisance.

However, in a very dramatic plot twist, it was reported by Zaobao that the man who was arrested said he had “got the wrong car”. He had since apologised and also promised to compensate for the cost of washing the car. He also offered to wash the owner’s car daily.

What happened

Shin Min Daily News reported on Monday (20 November) that a car Sims Vista Market & Food Centre in Aljunied has been vadalised. Not only were there offerings placed on the bonnet of the car, but the car also had shit smeared on its front and rear windshields, windows, and door handles.

The man who was arrested later came forward on 21 November to explain, admitting that he had “gotten the wrong car” and that the person whose car he wanted to smear shit on was actually his neighbour’s.

“I have known my neighbor for many years, and he has been causing trouble for me. I couldn’t bear it, but I didn’t dare to have a direct conflict, so I decided to smear feces on his car to vent my anger,” he said.

He added that when he went to the toilet on the day of the incident, he put the shit in a plastic container. He then put on gloves and went to the carpark to smear shit, but he did not expect to smear shit on the wrong car.

“The two cars are of the same model, both are white, and their license plates are very similar, so I got the wrong car,” he explained.

Willing to wash the car owner’s car every day

He said that he hopes to apologize to the car owner, and he is willing to wash her car every day to make amends. “I understand that anyone who encounters such a thing will be angry. After her anger subsides, I will come to apologize in person,” he continued.

In addition, according to the address written on the note on the car, the reporter found the flat of the person, who is believed to be the original target of the man’s prank. The owner of the house, Tan, said in an interview that he did not know about the incident. But when the reporter revealed the name on the note, the 62-year-old man said he knew the perpetrator.

Tan, who is staying in Blk 52, said that the two families had been neighbours for decades. Both the perpetrator and him knew each other since they were young, and they had a good relationship. “We haven’t had any friction recently. I don’t know what made him do such a thing,” he added.

Tan also told reporters that the person the note was directed to is his younger brother, and his younger brother’s car was parked not too far from the scene of the crime.

He also said that he had nothing to do with the perpetrator, but neighbours who knew them pointed out that the relationship between the two families has not been harmonious.

A neighbour who did not want to be named revealed that the relationship between the two families has always been tense and they have never been very nice to each other even though there has been no direct conflict.

Another insider also revealed that the man who caused the incident had been arrested for causing trouble in the past, so he will always try to avoid the two families.
