An Indonesian domestic helper working in a bungalow had stolen at least $50,000 worth of cash and 15 pieces of jewellery from her employer’s mother-in-law.

The police officers who were deployed to escort her the domestic helper heard the sound of paper crumpling coming from her and later found a pawn ticket on her. According to Zaobao, the police also seized some jewellery from the lunch box bag she had been keeping.

The accused, known as Enna is from Indonesia and is 39 years old. She had been working in Singapore as a domestic helper from 1 January to 30 June 2021 in one of the private properties located in the MacPherson area.

She pleaded guilty to two of the four charges, including theft and breach of miscellaneous statutes, while the other two will be considered by the judge for sentencing.

According to the findings, the 70-year-old victim is the mother-in-law of the domestic helper’s employer. The police received a report on 16 June 2021 that $50,000 worth of cash and 15 pieces of jewellery had gone missing. The family members could not find it after two days of searching, so the police were notified and brought in to investigate the case.

During the investigation, the police had asked the accused to give her statement on 17 June, but she denied stealing anything from the victim at the time.

She was sent to a maid agency the next day and arranged to live there pending the outcome of the investigation. Unexpectedly, when she was registering at the agency, the policewoman who was escorting the domestic helper heard a rustling sound coming from her and immediately searched her body. A hidden piece of pawn ticket was found on her.
