65-year-old cyclist, who works as cleaner, dies after being hit by Go-Ahead Singapore bus

A 65-year-old man had unfortunately passed away after sustaining head injuries from an accident involving a bus. Reportedly, the man (Chen Qinghe), who worked as a cleaner, was crossing the road on a bicycle when he was hit by a bus.

The accident took place at 7.25 am on Monday (10 April) near Pasir Ris bus interchange. The cleaner was hit by a Go-Ahead Singapore bus. He was sent to the hospital but later passed away from severe head injuries.

According to Zaobao, a reporter visited the funeral wake of the deceased on Wednesday (12 April) morning and met his 65-year-old wife who choked up during the interview, saying that the incident happened so suddenly that the family could hardly accept it.

“He cycles to work every day. That day, I was notified that my husband had been hit by a bus. I woke my son up immediately. We went out to look for him, and then I was informed that my husband had been sent to Changi General Hospital,” said his wife.

When the man’s wife and her son reached the hospital, he was already unconscious. The hospital also told the family members to be mentally prepared for the worst.

“My heart hurts. In the afternoon, my husband was pronounced dead,” she told the reporter.

The deceased’s wife, known as Mrs Chen, said that her husband’s level of education was not high and he only went to Primary School. In order to support the family, he worked as a renovation worker and also sold Otah in a coffee shop. He worked hard to support his son to complete his university and only became a cleaner when he turned 60 years old.

She also added that her husband had a lot of friends during his lifetime. In the past few days, many relatives and friends have come to the funeral wake to express their condolences, which warmed her heart.

Reportedly, Shin Min Daily News has reached out to Go-Ahead Singapore for comment. Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) has also confirmed that they received a call for assistance and one person was taken to Changi General Hospital.

In response to enquiry, the police confirmed that a 65-year-old cyclist who was in involving an accident with a bus was taken to the hospital in a coma had eventually passed away, while the 45-year-old bus captain is currently assisting the police with their investigation.
