In a recent operation targeting online child sexual exploitation activities, the police arrested 23 men aged between 22 and 61. The suspects are accused of possessing, transmitting, and distributing child abuse materials as well as possessing obscene films. One of the men, a 44-year-old, is currently under investigation.
The operation lasted for five weeks, and the Criminal Investigation Department conducted raids at multiple locations. During these raids, all electronic devices, including computers, handphones, and hard disks, were seized. The police have referred some of the men to the Home Team Community Assistance and Referral Scheme (HT CARES), where social workers, also known as CARES officers, will conduct social triaging on the men and assess whether further intervention is needed.
The possession, distribution, and transmission of child abuse materials are serious offenses. Anyone found guilty of possessing or accessing child abuse material, and knowing or having reason to believe that it is such material, can be punished with imprisonment for up to five years or caning, in addition to a fine. Those who distribute, sell, or offer for sale child abuse material, or possess it for the purpose of distribution, sale, or offer for sale, and know or have reason to believe that it is child abuse material, can be punished with imprisonment for up to seven years, caning, and a fine.
Any person who has in his possession any obscene film shall be liable on conviction to a fine not exceeding $20,000 or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding six months or both.
The police have reiterated their commitment to taking strong action against perpetrators of child sexual exploitation activities. They have also urged the public to report any suspicious activities or individuals to the authorities immediately. Such reports can help prevent further harm to vulnerable children and bring offenders to justice.
