ERP rates to go up by S$1 at several expressway locations

To manage traffic congestion during the morning commute, Electronic Road Pricing (ERP) rates will increase by S$1 at seven expressway locations during several time belts from April 3.

The increase will cover earlier time periods. The southbound CTE after Braddell Road and the PIE slip road into southbound CTE, ERP rates will increase to S$4 between 8am and 8.30am. Meanwhile, at the KPE (ECP) after Defu Flyover, there will be a S$1 charge between 7am and 7.30am, and charges along this stretch will go up to S$5 between 8.30am and 9am.

According to the Land Transport Authority (LTA), traffic had built up at various stretches of expressways based on its monitoring of traffic conditions in February. ERP rates for other previously announced timeslots and gantries will remain unchanged. LTA added that the number of locations and timeslots charged is still lower than the number charged pre-COVID, and it will continue to monitor traffic speeds and congestion levels closely and assess if ERP rates need to be further adjusted.

The increase in ERP rates is part of efforts to manage traffic congestion and ensure smooth traffic flow during peak hours. The ERP system was introduced in Singapore in 1998 to help alleviate traffic congestion by charging motorists for using congested roads during peak hours. The charges vary depending on the location and time of day, with higher charges during peak hours and lower charges during off-peak hours. The system has been effective in reducing traffic congestion and encouraging the use of public transport.
