The Watchers at Lorong Chuan Private Estate

When a driver walked over to her parked car along Chuan Walk on 1 February, she found a rude note on her vehicle.

The note reads, “You Don’t Belong this neighborhood. Please remove your car.”

The driver’s husband called the person who left the note “self-entitled” for implying that non-residents could not park along that public road.

The note reminds me of a Netflix Series ‘The Watcher’. Could this letter be a ploy orchestrated by a group of residents or do you think it was simply just one angry resident who wrote it?

When asked, the residents said the note was uncalled for but added that limited parking spaces is a common problem in their area.

Why did the driver park along Chuan Walk

While the driver’s husband went for a business trip, she had gone to stay with her mother who lives in a Lorong Chuan HDB flat nearby.

She parked her car along Chuan Walk on Sunday (29 January) around 7 pm.

Three days later, the handwritten note was found on her car.

Chuan Walk is a narrow two-lane road with no double yellow lines. According to Shin Min Daily News, there are no signs indicating that parking is prohibited or that there are parking charges along the stretch where the driver parked her car.

Is this a matter of Entitlement or Equality?

One resident who lived at Chuan Walk for over 10 years said that many drivers would park in the area for convenience’s sake.

Every evening, around three to five cars would be parked there. Come morning, the cars would be driven off. This has been going on for about half a year.

There is a lack of parking spaces as many residents have multiple cars and some spaces are taken by non-residents’ vehicles. Residents would have to ‘reserve’ parking spots with trash cans or other objects.

Most residents are understanding as they acknowledge that the lane is considered a public parking space. However, some give and take should be exercised.

While residents tolerate parking spaces to be occupied by non-residents, the least drivers can do to avoid blocking the gates. Let’s be more considerate.
