3 reasons why mental well-being in the workplace is important

Yesterday was 10.10! Other than all the 10.10 sales, did you know that 10 October is also World Mental Health Day?

In case you didn’t know hor, the objective of this World Mental Health Day is to raise awareness of mental health issues around the world and to mobilize efforts in support of mental health.

This day is also a day for all everyone working on mental health issues to talk about their work, and what more needs to be done to make mental health care a reality for people worldwide.

No wonder ah no wonder, on this day, the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC)’s youth wing, Young NTUC, also organised a focus group discussion around the topic of mental well-being solutions with employers, the youth and young working adults.

This closed-door focus group discussion titled, “LIT (Learning Is Triggered) Safe Space Conversations” is part of the #EveryWorkerMatters Conversations, a larger-scale series of engagements by the Labour Movement to engage all workers across various life stages.

Tia gong it was held at The Art Room, Starbucks Jewel Changi Airport, a venue sponsored by Starbucks Singapore and got more than 30 participants attended the session!

Amongst the participants hor, there were students lah, young working adults lah, and even senior management and HR practitioners!

They were all there to share their perspectives on mental well-being initiatives at the workplace, and also their views and receptiveness toward current mental well-being solutions at the workplace and what they hope to see in the future.

Don’t know what you think lah, but lao niang thinks mental well-being is sibei important at the workplace leh.

Why you ah, you ask?

Lai, here are the 3 reasons why it is so important and you really cannot play play one

1. Because it is the right thing to do!

This is common sense tio bo? Whether or not an employee has a mental health problem, an employer has a duty of care to ensure their health, safety and well-being one leh. Employees are your assets!

2. It helps business to boost productivity

This brings me to my next point – when your employees are happy and positive, it helps businesses to increase their productivity.

In other words, when towkays positively manage and support their employees’ mental well-being, towkays can ensure that their staff perform to their potential, hence allowing their business to huat to the max.

Same logic as happy wife = happy life!

3. It creates a win-win situation for everyone

When towkays care for their workers and create a mentally healthy workplace, workers will feel respected, involved, heard, well-led and valued, they won’t anyhowly throw letter and leave the company.

Then the towkays also no need to stress about having to find a replacement every other day, tio bo?

Say real one lah, as the younger workers start to join the workforce it is necessary to also consider what these younger workers need – instead of just saying they are strawberries or snowflakes.

Other than mental well-being support hor, tia gong in an ongoing survey conducted by the NTUC Youth Taskforce, it was revealed that more than 2,000 youth had responded to the survey so far and they shared that the top four areas they worry most about are:

  • work-life balance (20.4%)
  • being able to adapt at work (15.9%)
  • being able to decide on their career path without being limited by others’ expectations (11.4%)
  • being happy in the organisation’s work environment or culture (11.2%).

And out of these 2,000 youth who responded, about 11% do not feel sufficiently prepared to step into the workforce.

Don’t forget that these youths are our future 国家栋梁 (the backbone of our country).

Maybe that’s why the NTUC Youth taskforce is so active in engaging these youth to find out their fears, concerns and aspirations – so that they look into developing specific initiatives to address the unique needs of these youth, who are transitioning to their next stage of life.

Life is so good for the youths nowadays ah – 想当年, back in those days where got such things like people holding your hands to help you along the way de.
