Hello, September ended liao have you woken up? Or picked up a new skill like me?

Share

Time flies jin fast sia, almost as fast as Sergio Perez’s red bull car. September has ended liao, so Lao Niang is here to wake you up. With two months left to the end of the year, are you on your way to ticking off your 2022 new year resolution ah?

If you’re not hor, you probably got a long way to go. Worse ah, if you can’t even remember what you had set out to do, then shame on you leh.

Just to show off and make you feel ashamed of yourself, since the start of the year, Lao Niang has:

  1. Gotten my driving license
  2. Maintained a weekly jogging routine
  3. Attended a web analytics boot camp

That’s right, Lao Niang figured that since my English is so powderful already, I should also ensure that my numerical abilities are on par. Tio bo?

Otherwise, how can I prove to my boss that you guys love my articles (and also keep my job)? After all, nowadays, they are always talking about data skills and people are always showing off their newest certifications on LinkedIn. How can I lose out?

If you don’t want to be outdated, you should learn from me and also go pick up a new skill or two. Pro-tip is to hint hint your boss during review, during lunch or at the water cooler.

If you work in an unionised company, then NJHL (你就好咯 / how nice for you) because you probably no need to worry so much or go crack your brains to figure out what kind of new skill or training you need. Because ah, chances are, your management and your union are already in talks and planning out the new skill or training you need liao because of the Company Training Committee (CTC).

In case you don’t know hor, this Company Training Committee (CTC), is an initiative launched by the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC) in April 2019 to support workers in achieving better work prospects through company training. The formation of this CTC is meant to help workers train for the technological challenges of the future, by aligning their training with the transformation needs of their companies.

During the Budget earlier this year, the Gahmen also announced that they will park aside another $100 million to scale up on this CTC so that more workers can receive relevant training – which then helps to them achieve better wages, welfare and work prospects.

Tia gong besides pushing this CTC to more companies hor, NTUC is also looking to work with agencies to improve the recognition of stackable skills-based micro-credentials so that workers can take up non-formal learning courses over time and have their efforts and new skills recognised.

Not I want to nag at you lah hor. But all these pick up new skill lah reskilling lah is really bo bian one. The reality is sibei harsh one. The work and business environment is maciam women’s mood when they lai ang (come menses) – they change sibei fast one. If we don’t keep upskilling ourselves, how to stay relevant in the workforce leh?

Also hor, if you got keep up with the news, newspaper already say by 2030, around 1 in 4 citizens will be aged 65 and above (but this one not relevant for me, because I’m Forever 18 *FLIPS HAIR*). This is legit scary ageing population sia. Means if employers don’t train us and don’t invest in us, then very few people are left to work. Then later they say want to bring in foreign talent, everyone buay song.

No pain no gain lei. And actually, it’s a win-win situation and you need to make it happen. Because when you learn new skills hor, you can include them in your resume and LinkedIn, so satki!
