A woman has gone viral online for scolding the mother of a baby who’s not wearing a mask while they were on the MRT. Infectious disease specialists said that such request was “unreasonable”, reported Zaobao.

According to the video uploaded last night (2 December) on the Facebook page Singapore Incidents and reshared by ROADS.sg, a woman can be seen scolding the mother of a baby who is not wearing a mask while they were on the MRT.

In the 29-second video, the woman wearing a dark blue dress shouted, “How come your baby never wear a mask? Babies must also wear masks, ok? How I know whether your baby doesn’t have virus?”

The video drew a lot of flak from netizens after it was uploaded online. Netizens were questioning if the woman was under too much pressure and hence her overreaction.

In response to the video, infectious disease specialist Dr Leong Hoe Nam said in an interview that the woman’s insistence that the baby should wear a mask is unreasonable.

“I believe that this woman has never taken care of a child. Anyone who has taken care of a child knows that even if the child wears a mask, there is no way for them to wear it all the time. Moreover, the baby will keep drooling. If the baby wears a mask, it will dampen the mask very quickly. Once the mask is wet, the mask is equivalent to useless,” said Dr Leong.

According to the Ministry of Health’s guidelines, only children aged six and above need to wear a mask when leaving their homes. The Ministry of Health also stated on its website that it is also not recommended for children aged two and below to wear a mask due to safety reasons.
