Wah wah wah! What just happened? Lao niang got hear wrongly a not? Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat is stepping aside as the leader of the fourth-generation People’s Action Party (PAP) leadership team?!
AH KEAT! WHY? YOU DON’T WANT TO BECOME PM LIAO MEH?
In case you still blur blur don’t know what happened, on Apr 8, Ah Keat announced that after careful deliberation and discussions with his family, he decided to step aside as leader of the 4G team, because he feels he is a bit too old for the role liao, and a younger leader who will have a longer runway would suit the role better.
I mean ok lah, if you think about it hor, all our past 3 Prime Ministers at least sit in the position for sibei long one, and they were still quite young as compared to Ah Keat who is going to be in his 60s.
Founding Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew was in his 30s when he became Prime Minister. Emeritus Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong was 49, and PM Lee Hsien Loong was 52.
So hor, Ah Keat at 60 years old this year is really A BIT old liao. And by the time COVID-19 is over, he how old liao sia. Probably no more energy left 🤭 🤭 🤭
But stepping aside doesn’t mean Ah Keat is going to retire and pack his bag and go Hawaii for holiday lah. He will still continue to mentor the younger ministers and help to identify another leader from the pool of young blood (hopefully a more shuai one too).
Ah Keat will also continue to be the Deputy Prime Minister and Coordinating Minister for Economic Policies, but he will step down as Minister of Finance at the next Cabinet reshuffle in about two weeks’ time.
Since PM Lee also accepted his decision liao, let’s just wish Ah Keat all the best!
Must also give Ah Keat credits for all the good work he has done so far for Singapore – as a Minister for Education, as a Minister for Finance, and of course as a Deputy Prime Minister.
Just think of all the budget and money he dished out during the COVID-19 period which saved a lot of lives and a lot of people’s rice bowl. IT’S BILLIONS OF MONEY, HAO MA?
