A report by human resources consulting firm Mercer, shows that satisfaction levels among employees in Singapore have declined consistently for the last three years.

This is in contrast to the upward trend among employees in the region and worldwide, Mercer’s 2018 Singapore Employee Engagement Index stated.

The Philippines, Vietnam and Indonesia top the region for employee engagement at 82%, while China and India are both in the fourth position at 81%. Singapore is 13th out of the 14 countries in the Asia-Pacific.

The report found that only 67% of employees in Singapore would recommend their companies as good places to work, compared to 75% of employees from Asia-Pacific, 76% globally.

33% of workers in Singapore said that they are uncertain about their opportunity for growth and they are less positive about their workload ad compared with peers in the region.

The report also found 2 other insights of Singaporean workers. Many said that the culture of their organization is limiting them from speaking their mind freely, and decisions in the organization are not made in a timely fashion.

CEO of Mercer in Singapore, Ms Peta Latimer said: “Improving employee engagement continues to represent a significant opportunity — not just for businesses but for the economy as a whole, as we prepare for the future of work.”

“Companies must foster a culture of empowerment, one where every employee feels included and appreciated. Engagement represents the best opportunity for Singapore to optimise the human capital it has,” Ms Latimer said.
