According to the national paper of Singapore, Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) confirmed that there are about 21,000 Wireless@SG hot spots in Singapore.

There were 10,000 such hot spots in 2016 when the government set the target of 20,000 by 2018. This means that the government has overbuild 1,000 hot spots and the process of building more hot spots continue.

These hot spots are spread around the island in public areas with high footfall. Places such as hawker centres, community centres, libraries and government buildings, seniors’ activity centres and family services centres.

Depending on user density at each hot spot, connection speed varies from 5Mbps to 30Mbps. At 30Mbps, some Wireless@SG hot spots connection is now faster than 4G speeds.

This island wide free connection benefits people who might not have data plans, enhancing digital inclusiveness as the country becomes a smart nation.

Using the free connection to download movies and surf the net instead of 4G data network was one of the cost saving ideas proposed by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong in his Chinese speech at the National Day Rally 2018.
