A 53-year-old woman, Suriati Binte Misran, was fined $2000 in court on 11 April 2018 for pet abandonment.

The Agri-Food & Veterinary Authority of Singapore (AVA) received an alert that five cats were found abandoned at the void deck of Blk 180A Rivervale Crescent. Upon investigation, Suriati’s son was identified via the lift’s CCTV footage, which showed him carrying the cage containing the cats. Suriati had directed her son to leave the cats at the void deck. All cats were subsequently rehomed.

AVA investigates all feedback on pet abandonment and will take enforcement action, where necessary. Individuals who abandon their pets are liable to a maximum fine of $10,000 and/or a maximum jail term of 12 months for first
convictions.

Safeguarding animal welfare is a shared responsibility that requires the cooperation of all stakeholders, including the public. While AVA continues to ensure that the necessary enforcement action is taken and to raise awareness on animal welfare, members of the public can play their part by being vigilant.

The public should promptly report cases of animal welfare issues to AVA via our 24-hour hotline, 1800-476-1600, or via AVA website.

Providing photographic and/or videographic evidence will help us in our investigations. All information shared with AVA will be held in the strictest confidence.
