Have you cancelled on a reservation before?

Have you made a reservation at a restaurant and then cancelled it?

Bjorn Shen, the proprietor of restaurant Artichoke faced one too many cancelled reservations and decided to impose a cancellation charge. In an impassioned post on Facebook, the restauranteur spoke of how cancellations got so bad that they lose 1/3rd of revenue. 32 last minute cancellations in one night.

But seriously: Why? Why cancel? Why you do dis?

Here are some rebuttals we’d like to deliver to those who give excuses to cancel:

Excuse number 1: “Eh I give them business leh,I tua pai can or not?”

Rubbish. If you didn’t pay for your food, you didn’t give them business. You’re a liability.

Excuse number 2: “They’re empty one lah, don’t go also never mind”

Rubbish. On paper they are fully booked and cannot accept new bookings because of you. They’re also empty because of your cancellation.

Excuse number 3: “Ha, ha I overslept”

“Ha, ha…we forgot you booked a table and gave it to someone else.” How does that feel?

Excuse number 4: “I dunno leh, I book 5 restaurants later then decide”

Do you make dates with 5 girls and then later then decide who to go out with? At least the girls can bitch slap you, the restaurants can’t.

Excuse number 5: “But everyone also like that what”

Everybody jump down the building you also jump lah is it?

Excuse number 6: “If the boss scared of cancellations then close shop don’t do business lah”

If you scared of paying penalty then stay at home eat Maggie mee lah.

Excuse number 7: “Wah lau, your food so big meh? Must ya ya put cancellation charge?”

The food not big, the lost revenue very big. Employee salary also very big. People’s salary use to pay for Ah Gong and Ah Mah, cannot pay salary liao how?

Excuse number 8: “But all other restaurants ok with it leh~”

No they’re not. They’re just not as vocal as Bjorn Shen.

So let’s please do all restaurants in Singapore a big favour and not be an idiot? If you make a reservation, honour your attendance. If not, don’t make the booking at all.

Note: All this also applies to wedding RSVPs.
