The Police have arrested a 32- year-old man for his suspected involvement in a case of attempted cheating.

On 30 March 2018, Police were alerted by the victim that he had lost his debit card and unauthorized online transactions had been made using the card. The transactions included the purchase of a mobile phone at a retail outlet in a shopping mall along Scotts Road.

Acting on the information received, officers from Tanglin Police Division arrested the suspect at the shopping mall on the same day. The victim’s debit card was recovered.  Two mobile phones that are believed to have been stolen as well as suspected drugs and drug-related paraphernalia were also seized.

The suspect will be charged in the court with attempted cheating. Any person found guilty of the offense of attempted cheating shall be punished with imprisonment for a term which may extend to 10 years, and shall also be liable to fine.

The Police would like to take this opportunity to remind merchants and sales staff to exercise vigilance and adopt correct card acceptance procedures when processing debit or credit card transactions. If they suspect something is amiss, they should contact the bank for advice immediately.
