Three men, aged between 31 and 50, will be charged in Court on 27 March 2018 for three separate cases of using abusive language and criminal force, as well as voluntarily causing hurt to paramedics from the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF).
The brief details of the cases are as follows:
- On 31 July 2016, a 47-year-old man swung his arm and hit a SCDF paramedic on her neck in a residential unit along Choa Chu Kang Avenue 1. The man will be charged with voluntarily causing hurt to deter a public servant from the discharge of her duty under Section 332 of the Penal Code, Chapter 224.
- On 30 September 2017, a 31-year-old man kicked a SCDF paramedic on his right thigh at a taxi stand located at Clarke Quay. The man will be charged with using criminal force to deter a public servant from the discharge of his duty under Section 353 of the Penal Code, Chapter 224.
- On 18 December 2017, a 50-year-old man used abusive words against a SCDF paramedic and pushed him in a hotel room located along Wishart Road. The man will be charged with using abusive language against public servant punishable under Section 6(3) of the Protection from Harassment Act, Chapter 256A, and using criminal force to deter a public servant from the discharge of his duty under Section 353 of the Penal Code, Chapter 224.
Anyone convicted for using abusive language against a public servant under Section 6(3) of the Protection from Harassment Act shall be punished with an imprisonment term not exceeding 12 months, or with a fine not exceeding $5,000/-, or with both.
The offence of voluntarily causing hurt to deter a public servant from the discharge of his duty under Section 332 of the Penal Code, Chapter 224 is punishable with imprisonment term which may extend to seven years, or with a fine, or with caning, or with any combination of such punishments.
The offence of using criminal force against a public servant in the discharge of his duty under Section 353 of the Penal Code, Chapter 224 is punishable with imprisonment term which may extend to four years, or with fine, or with both.
The Police and SCDF have zero tolerance towards such acts of violence against public servants who are carrying out their duties, and the Police will not hesitate to take action against those who blatantly disregard the law.
