From August this year, teachers at primary schools, secondary schools and junior colleges will have to start paying for parking.

For outdoor parking, teachers will have to pay $75 a month during school term and $15 a month during the school holidays (excluding March holidays).

For sheltered carparks, they will have to pay $100 a month during school term and $20 a month during the holidays.

Motorcyclists pay lesser. It’ll cost them $13 a month at uncovered carparks and $2 for school holidays. For sheltered carparks, it’ll cost them $14 for school term and $3 for school holidays.

Canteen stall operators, coaches and instructors who go to schools regularly may also be required to pay for season parking.

Ad-hoc visitors such as parents or volunteers will not need to pay parking fees.

In 2015, an Auditor-General’s Office report faulted some institutions for allowing their staff to park for free or at fees below market rate.

The Auditor-General noted that such practices “are tantamount to providing hidden subsidies for vehicle parking”. This led to Ministry of Education looking into the matter.

This move will affect 360 primary and secondary schools as well as junior colleges.

All five polytechnics and the Institute of Technical Education have implemented parking charges in October last year.
