You might have read about Grab’s major acquisition in the news today.

Here are 5 things you need to know about Singapore-based ride-hailing firm Grab’s move to buy over its rival, Uber’s business, in Southeast Asia.

Sayonara to Uber Singapore

Grab will gain control all of Uber’s Southeast Asia’s operations in Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam and…Singapore.

The value of the deal is not revealed but Uber will gain a 27.5% share in Grab, which is already valued at several billions of dollars.

Uber previously invested $700 million in the SEA region and the company will now focus on research and technology development focus on other markets including India.

8th april

This is the day when Uber will transition all of its services over to Grab platform.

According to Uber’s email to its commuters in Singapore, all requests after this date should be made from the Grab app.

Uber Eats, however, will run till end May. Uber delivery and restaurant partners will move over to GrabFood platform after that.

Uber drivers need to sign up for Grab service

Uber drivers who want to continue driving a private-hire vehicle should sign up for the Grab service to accept rides after 8th April.

According to Uber, all rides accepted on Uber platform before 8th April will be paid in full.

It is unknown if drivers currently contracted under Uber-owned Lion City Rental (LCR) will be affected by the acquisition.

However, there’s a notice on Lion City Rental’s website claiming that LCR is closed until further notice.

Drivers banned from Grab’s platform

According to Grab’s website, Uber drivers who have been suspended or removed from Grab platform for breaking Grab’s rules will not be able to re-register to drive with Grab.

For those who are driving Grab, do comply with Grab’s code of conduct as it will be the only major ride-hailing firm left in Singapore’s market.

Don’t delete Uber’s app just yet

If you’re an avid traveler, don’t be too quick to delete Uber’s app.

You can still use the Uber app in more than 80 countries around the world. This includes North America, Europe, Middle East, India and other Asian countries aside from SEA and China.
