Ten arrested for illegal horse betting activities

The Police have arrested 9 men and 1 woman, aged between 64 and 69, for their suspected involvement in illegal horse betting activities, following an operation conducted on 18 March 2018.

The suspects were arrested for offences of illegal bookmaking and betting along Bayfront Avenue. Cash amounting to $14,835 was seized. Police investigations are ongoing.

Under the Betting Act, any person who bets with a bookmaker is liable, on conviction, to a fine up to $5,000, imprisonment of up to six months, or both. For those found to be involved in bookmaking shall face a fine of between $20,000 and $200,000, and a jail term not more than five years.

The Police take a serious view of all forms of illegal betting activities and will continue to take tough enforcement action against such activities.
