The Singapore Ministry of Foreign Affairs has advised Singaporeans to defer travel to the country.

The small island nation declared a state of emergency for 15 days from 5 February.

“Security forces have been deployed in Male due to ongoing political developments,” said MFA. “In view of the unstable situation in the Maldives, Singaporeans are advised to defer all non-essential travels to the Maldives until the situation stabilises.”

Singapore has no diplomatic representation in the Maldives, which will constrain its ability to extend consular assistance in an emergency.

MFA has also advised Singaporeans currently in the Maldives to exercise vigilance and take all necessary precautions for their personal safety.

If in need, Singaporeans should contact the MFA Duty Office by enail at mfa_duty_officer@mfa.gov.sg or call +65 6379 8800/8855.

The popular holiday destination went into a crisis last week after the Supreme Court rejected terrorism convictions against nine leading opposition figures.
