The scammers apparently tell the victims that they need to pay their outstanding taxes via an ATM bank transfer immediately.

In its advisory, it stressed that it does not make telephone calls asking taxpayers to transfer money to bank accounts.

“Members of the public who receive such calls are advised to ignore the instructions given by the caller and are encouraged to lodge police reports.”

Those who receive the suspicious phone calls should request for the caller’s full name, telephone number and department, and validate this through IRAS’ QSM helpline on 1800-356-8225.

Taxpayers should also be warned about other types of scams, including those via email, WhatsApp and SMSes.

Some scam emails even mimic IRAS’ email address, with “@iras.gov.sg”.

“Such scam emails usually carry a file attachment requesting the recipients to open it. You are advised not to click on any link or open any attachment in the email as it may contain computer virus.”
