This surpasses the previous record of 25 kg which was harvested at the Community Gardens Edibles Competition.

Mr Huang Guanghui told a Chinese newspaper that he grew up in a kampung, and always observed his father work as a vegetable farmer.

He later became a vegetable seller and retired about 13 years ago .

He joined the community garden near his block in Bukit Batok Street 31 6 years ago.

In September last year, he sowed his first few winter melon seeds after he became interested in planting them.

Over the next few months, he watched the plant grow in size and took great care of it. He used chicken manure and fertilisers regularly.

He told the newspaper that he would remove the plants which were growing too slowly so that the nutrients would be channeled to the remaining ones.

After he harvested the winter melon, he sliced the gigantic winter melon and shared the fruit with his neighbours.
