Between January and October this year, there has been 97 road deaths caused by accidents. This is a 17% drop from the same period last year which saw 117 deaths.

Road injuries was also down by 10%.

Barring a jump in the last two months of the year, the number of road deaths will be the lowest recorded in the 37 years for which there is available data.

The drop is a continuing trend since the 1980s, when between 200 and 350 people die on Singapore’s road every year.

Experts link the decline to three efforts: campaigns that urge road users to slow down and drive carefully, dialogues with road users to change their mindset, and the widespread use of cameras to deter speeding.

Speeding has been the biggest causes of accidents, so with these campaigns, the number of road fatalities has continued to be on a downward trend.
