The area where the boat sank is about 500 metres from Middle Rocks, near Pedra Branca, which is within the Singapore Maritime Search and Rescue Region.

A Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency patrol boat was deployed immediately but when the boat reached the scene, the two men’s boat had already sunk, and the two were missing.

Singapore Maritime and Port Authority was alerted to the incident at 7.30pm and has said that it was coordinating the search operation with the Malaysian and Indonesian authorities.

The Singapore Navy’s RSS Sovereignty, Singapore Coast Guard Vessel and air force helicopters have been deployed to support the search-and-rescue operation.

Singapore’s Minister for Defence Dr Ng Eng Hen said in a Facebook post that Singapore, Malaysian and Indonesian authorities are coordinating their search and resue efforts to look for the two missing men.
