The authorities in Johor recently confiscated 210 boxes of baby milk powder suspected to be fake.

They were sold in Chinese medical shops and convenience store in Johor Baru. These outlets are in Iskandar Puteri, Taman Mutiara Rini, Taman Orkid, Taman Daya and Taman Nusa Bestari.

The fake instant formula boxes were said to be mixed with the original ones on shelves and priced according to the original ones (RM200 each).

The original milk producers have been receiving complaints about their milk powder since August.

They decided to investigate the matter and raid the five premises after they received a report that a baby suffered from severe vomiting after consuming fake infant formula.

The 50-year-old business operator said he did not know that the 1.8kg boxes of baby milk powder sold at all his five outlets were fake.

The authorities will be conducting a test to see if the confiscated baby milk powder is fake. They are also going to conduct more raids to identify the fake producers.

First offenders face a RM10,000 fine or jail term of not more than three years or both while second offenders face a RM20,000 fine or jail term of not more than five years or both, for each item exhibited.

Netizens in parenting forums have advised fellow parents to buy infant formula from bigger and more credible supermarkets like Tesco, Jusco and Giant from Malaysia.
