The dogs from the Police K-9 unit of the Special Operations Command will accompany police men from the Public Transport Security Command (Transcom), may also stop commuters to check their belongings as well as ask for their personal particulars if a person appears to behave suspiciously.

Checks on commuters should not take more than two minutes, if the commuter cooperates with the police. According to the police, the checks have led to arrests of people who were found with dangerous weapons, like brass knuckle-dusters, as well as stolen property.

In the first 10 months of this year, there were 688 arrests by the Transcom. This is higher then the 676 arrests for the whole of last year.

More than 50,000 commuters are checked every year by Transcom officers. And during patrols, the officers will walk alongside or behind the dogs which will be on a leash which is held by a handler.
