A 41-year-old male driver, was arrested for suspected drink driving after the Mercedes-Benz mounted a divider on Tanjong Pagar road yesterday at about 6.30pm.

The car hit a lorry on the other side and crashed into four people who were waiting to cross the road.

Three men and a woman, aged between 23 to 56, were injured and taken to Singapore General Hospital.

Two of the men and the lady are Singaporean while the fourth is an Australian.

The lady suffered deep cuts and abrasions while one of the men was admitted to ICU for observation and the other suffered a fractured nose.

The Australian man appeared to have a spinal cord injury.

One of the bystanders said the car seemed to have lost control. After it crashed into the lorry and rammed into the pedestrians, it collided with a Trans-Cab taxi.

According to other bystanders, the sound of tyres screeched and there was a loud bang followed by screams.

One of the four injured was also bleeding severely from the head after the accident.

Based on a new sentencing framework for drink driving, drink drivers should expect to be jailed if they have injured someone or damaged property.

The time served in jail are dependent on a few factors – how serious the injuries were, how much alcohol the driver had drank and how dangerously he was driving.
