MFA recommends Singaporeans to avoid travelling to Mount Agung, but Indonesia thinks it’s “excessive”

So Singapore’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has in a statement recommended Singaporeans not to travel to Mount Agung in Bali and its vicinity after the volcano started erupting on Tuesday (21 November).

Mount Agung

“Singaporeans should defer non-essential travel to the affected areas of the island at this juncture. Volcanic eruptions could result in ash clouds that could severely disrupt air travel, leading to closures of affected airports. Ash fall could also affect outdoor activities.”

It also advised Singaporeans currently in Bali to monitor developments closely and take necessary precautions for their personal safety…and be ready to evacuate at short notice.

But Indonesia’s authorities said that the advisory was “excessive”.

“It’s excessive for Singapore to issue an advisory on Bali as only a radius of 6 to 7.5 kilometres around the crater of Mount Agung is considered dangerous,” said its spokesman for the disaster mitigation agency.

Maybe our teman-teman (friends) in Bali are worried that the advisory will affect their tourist numbers and income. But better be safe than sorry right?
