Did Chan Chun Sing really say he’s prepared to be our next PM if he’s called upon?

Share

A report by international newswire Reuters published an article with a headline that reads “Singapore minister says he is prepared to become next PM if called upon”.

Wait…did Minister Chan Chun Sing actually say that?

Because if he did, Singaporeans have the right to be concerned. After all, the Prime Minister of any country is a big deal and if citizens have zero interest, it either shows that they don’t care about the country at all or they have complete trust in the leader.

But hor, he actually didn’t say he’s prepared to become the next Prime Minister of Singapore if called upon leh. (Singaporeans, mai kanchiong)

Nowhere in the Reuters report actually quoted him saying that.

What Chan said was, “all of us have to be prepared to do the job when called upon” when he was asked if he would like the job of a Prime Minister.

Chan also said no matter who becomes the next prime minister from the team of fourth generation leaders, there will be “business continuity” in Singapore.

That means whoever becomes the chosen one, it will be BAU (business as usual) for Singapore.

Actually…if you think about it…not that bad right?

If a company crumbles after a new CEO comes in, that means the company has failed. You still buy Apple products even though Steve Jobs is no longer around right?

Same thing goes for a country. It cannot be over dependent on one leader for long-lived success.

If Lee Kuan Yew is still around, he would be happy to know that Singapore passport is now the “most powerful” in the world.

Why? Because it shows that Singapore is successful not because of him but because of the system that he and his team has built for Singapore.

So Chan is right to say that all of them have to be prepared for the job if called upon.

Preparing for a new job doesn’t mean you’ll get the job mah. Still need to ace the interview.

So mai kanchiong. If you’re rooting for Speaker of Parliament Tan Chuan Jin or Minister Ong Ye Kung, they still stand a chance.
