How did Uber know I’m flying out of Singapore?

Dear Editor,

I recently booked a flight out of Singapore for a short weekend trip via Scoot. I also booked a hotel stay via Agoda.com for my trip.

Within 1 or 2 days, I received an email and a SMS from Uber promoting to me their private vehicle hire service at my destination when I land.

Uber

I am very concerned about two things.

  1. How did Uber know that I will be travelling, such that they can send me an email and SMS?
  2. Is there a breach in Personal Data Protection Act (PDPA) if my personal data was shared by Scoot or Agoda.com to other companies for marketing purposes?

I think the 3 companies need to come out to clarify and explain how Uber got wind of me travelling and marketing their services to me.

I am registered under the Do-Not-Call registry so I shouldn’t be receiving such marketing notices.

And so if there is indeed a breach of PDPA, I believe the Personal Data Protection Commission should come out to state their stand on this matter.

Regards,

Concerned traveller.
