Yup, Ministry of Manpower’s officers found 44 migrant workers squeezed into a 4 room Geylang apartment that was used as an illegal dormitory.

The officers also found cockroaches in drawers, blood trails from squashed bed bugs and a dirty fridge after being told of the issue by the Migrant Workers Centre (MWC).

Their poor state was reported by a worker who called their helpline.

The workers who were staying in the 1,300 sq ft apartment were mostly construction workers hired by different employers.

Luckily no big accident has happened because the officers found out that the workers had been cooking in their own rooms because it takes too much time to queue for the kitchen stove.

Workers also got to hang their clothes on their bunk beds as there were no proper laundry facilities.

Thin wooden partitions were used to create smaller rooms. But the tight conditions meant that fire safety was a concern.

According to the law, a maximum of six unrelated people can stay in a rented private residence.

But the workers did not report their case to the authorities because they were afraid that their employers will turn nasty towards them.
