Indonesia Police refused to hand Khasanah over to Singapore

The Indonesian maid Khasanah who killed Mr Chia Ngim Fong, 79, and his wife Chin Sek Fah, 78 will not be sent to Singapore due to the principle of personaliteit, said Indonesia’s National Police (Polri).

The Polri will however cooperate with the Singapore Police Force in solving the case.

Personaliteit is a local legal principle which states that any Indonesian arrested in the country for a crime committed overseas must be processed in Indonesia, instead of being sent to the jurisdiction where the offence took place, said Inspector-Genral Setyo Wasisto.

Khasanah, 41, who had worked here as a domestic helper for about a month was on the run for almost a week after she tied up her elderly employers and was found dead in their Bedok Reservoir flat on Jun 21.

The Indonesian counterparts reportedly acted on a tip-off and tracked her location to an Internet Cafe, where she was seen looking at online news reports about herself.

Officers then followed her to the hotel and arrested her.

She also admitted to her arresting officers that she murdered the elderly couple.

Khasanah was found to have various valuables in her possession, She had Singapore dollars, Indonesian rupiah, American dollars and other currencies amounting to S$256. The police also found a laptop, a computer keyboard, 3 mobile phones, 5 watches as well as jewellery including a ring, a jade bangle and a gold necklace.

Khasanah

Khasanah believed to have fled to Indonesia by a ferry from Harbourfront Centre last week.

Khasanah’s fate now lies in the hands of the Indonesian investigators, will they protect a fellow Indonesian at the risk of injustice? Or will they co-operate and let the law run its course?
